This Day In History: The Hula-Hoop

The patent of the Hula-Hoop – it happened on this day but in 1963. Arthur “Spud” Melin got it patented and Wham-O marketed the product in the late 1950’s. Millions were sold almost instantly at under $2 (two dollars) a pop.

It sure is named after the swaying Hawaiian dance and it sure is fun. I think the hula-hoop has its time and place and though its popularity has come and gone since its invention, it still remains a childhood recreation staple. Maybe even something adults turn to from time to time?

Time to get my hands on a vintage hip swiveling toy [such as this] today!
